ยท To Sir Joseph Banks, naturalist and patron of science : 1 autograph letter signed : 24 Dec 1810 : (MISC 0985) : from Rodmartin : begins, "If the inclosed miscellanie of odd names from my collection should contribute towards the making a merry Christmas for yourself and the Ladies I shall think my time in transcribing them well bestowed." With three and a half pages of humorous names culled from various parish registers. The list begins: "Joan Grone, the midwife, buried 1575. Kingston on Thames. / A daughter of Hamlet & Gertrude Johnson baptized. Romford. / John Wild & Agnes Gallant married -- Ibid. / Hercules Commander. Lambeth ..."

Topographer Daniel Lysons received both a B.A. and M.A. at Oxford, and, having taken religious orders, became curate in Mortlake and later Putney, Surrey. It was here he began his survey of the London region, later published in four volumes, with many drawings by the author. Together with his brother, Samuel, he undertook a survey of Britain called Magna Britannia, but only six volumes were completed before Samuel's death.
